Turn your phone into a Spectrum Analyzer. Speccy is an audible spectrum analysis tool, which displays the spread of amplitudes of audible frequencies detected through your device's microphone. It works using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) and 'Hamming Window' signal processing.
It has a number of applications, such as:
• Assessing environmental noise for health and safety standards
• Sound checks for PA systems and concerts
• Identifying audio signals obscured by noise to the human ear
• Testing the microphone on your device
• Measuring audio signals just outside human perception. As people age over 20 years, their aural perception range drops well below 20 kHz
Another real world application might be to help you get into a safe or combination lock for which you have forgotten the code. Using the spectrum analyzer with your device acoustically coupled to the safe's dial (in the case of mechanical tumblers only), turning the dial slowly, you can 'hear' when the tumblers drop; this is because the spectrum of the sound will be very slightly different than turning one 'normal' tick, depending on the build quality of the safe or combination lock. Then you know you've hit a correct number and start dialing the other way.
